Progressivism – spearhead cultural and political modernity – is the ideology that conceives of human life and human history as a journey on the path of a continuous and indefinite change, seen as something intrinsically good. “In the change, the improvement” could be the appropriate slogan to represent the progressive worldview.Progress and tradition
The word “progress” means “go forward, go forward”, and is commonly understood as a synonym for improvement: improvement of living conditions, the performance of a machine, etc. The concept of progress can, therefore, be applied to various spheres of human life, and always refers to a goal: you advance – you progress – in a certain direction to achieve a certain end, which may be of a spiritual nature , moral or material.
Progress spiritually may mean improving the practice of religion, in order to achieve an ever closer union with God; moral progress can mean improving the practice of the cardinal virtues, in order to live virtuously and in conformity with the dignity of human nature, capturing all the beneficial effects both on the individual and social level; progress materially, however, may mean improving certain conditions of life on the material plane (sanitation, health, food, etc.) in order to enable individuals and communities to be able to better meet the material needs of life.
But progress can also mean materially improve artwork of industrial or civil engineering, in order to make it fully functional for the purpose of its use; and also improve the scientific research to improve the understanding of the physical world, from which to derive benefits for specific needs and practical applications.
The progress so understood is not the opposite of tradition, indeed it can be said that progress is rooted in the tradition which means “transmission of knowledge and substantial continuity”, not only aimed to perpetuate the presence and influence over the lives of men principles, values and institutions, but also time to improve what has been acquired by developing their knowledge and application, without changing the substance.
Progressivism as a caricature of the true progress (which regards the person as a whole)
Compared to the rectum meaning of the word “progress”, progressivism is quite another thing. With good reason, it can be argued that progressivism is a caricature of the true concept of progress, a deformation whose root should be considered in subjectivism, philosophical basis of modernity, which makes man – emancipated from any objective and transcendent reference – the measure of all things.
The technical-scientific or technological progress, often heralded by the pioneers of progressivism as obvious manifestation of the goodness inherent in their idea of progress, is not at all a spiritual and moral improvement of the people; Indeed, according to what experience shows every day, you could say that between the two there is an inverse relationship. The reason for this seemingly strange result is to be found in what one might call “loss of the center”, ie in the reference only loss that is the measure of all things: God.
The man, who according to the liberal mentality is believed God, and therefore stands as a measure of all things – in a horizon from which he banished the dimension of being (which leads to disregard the nature of existing things), a domain edge the mere making – ends up becoming a victim of their megalomania, and then get lost in a frantic race to the possible achievable, confusing it with good, without noticing the tremendous deception inherent in the claim to apply the category of good to that which does not recognizes the objective nature (1).
With progressivism, the man, who rejects his creaturely status, claims to absolute master of reality, pretending to redo it according to the changing canons and unsure of his thought. This illusion – monstrous in both its premises in its effects – has unfortunately marked for centuries the lives of European nations, leading them towards the current moral disaster that is the antechamber of their self-destruction.
The liberal dogma: no going back
According to the liberal conception – linear and improvement tending to infinity – is inconceivable that men united in society can make opposite choices to those that occurred in the sign of the break with the constraints of a past considered oppressive and obscurantist – considered this as dominated by the primacy being on the becoming – and already become reality, or is not acceptable that they come back on their feet denying what has been sanctioned to be the “conquest of a new civil law”.
This is the case, for example, of the law 194, that in Italy since 1978 allows the practice of abortion. For progressives, the only hypothesis that the law to be abolished – and that it will replace a diametrically opposed legislation, ie devoted to promote the birth rate, in a context of renewed appreciation of the natural family, to be placed at the center of a real political national reconstruction – is simply absurd, as it would contradict their sense of history.
For progressives, in fact, it is unacceptable and, in fact, “out of history” that you recognize the dignity of the person to the human embryo and is proclaimed the duty of the state to defend him; that affirms the fundamental value of the birth rate as a physical guarantee of continuity of the nation; the recognition of the natural family (the only one consistent with the order established by the Creator) as the basic cell of political society (the state); that affirms the need for the policy is aimed at the good of the nation (which is considered a good in itself) .All concepts and values disliked by the progressivism, which, in a more or less explicit, it systematically pursues the cancellation and oblivion.
Nihilistic outcome of progressivism
At the beginning of XXI century, the progressive myth – based on the illusion anthropocentric – manifested socially also its transfiguration into nihilism, which marks the transition from modernity to postmodernity, from the delusion of human omnipotence to despair of his obvious landing : nothingness.
The post-modern nihilistic not opposed to liberal modernity, far from it. It represents, in fact, an evolution, placing themselves in full in the wake of the subversive process of destroying the man created by God in His image and likeness.
- It is important to remember that good of an organization is what helps to realize its purpose, in accordance with its nature, that is, according to what that body is capable of being and doing by birth. For example, the good entity Paul, who is a human person, it is not simply that which is desired by Paul (as judged good by him), but everything is aimed at shaping the life of Paul in harmony with nature human in which it is rooted, that everything is according to the inclinations of human nature: the conservation and development of life; the union of the sexes, the rearing and education of children; the knowledge of the cause and purpose of existence.
