ANGEL Merkel’s car was again pelted with tomatoes when angry crowds confronted her as she arrived for an election rally.
Around 150 anti-Merkel protesters booed and shouted “get lost” and hurled tomatoes at her as she as riven to the venue in Wolgast in the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ahead of the September 24 election.
The protestors waved banners reading “Stop the human-trafficker Merkel” in reference to her disastrous open-door immigration policy which saw more than 1.1 million migrants pour into Germany.
Wolgast, close to the Polish border, is a stronghold of the right wing Alternative for Germany (AfD).
In a regional election in September 2016, the AfD came second, behind the Social Democrats but ahead of Mrs Merkel’s Christian Democrats.
Angela Merkel heckled and hit by tomato during rally
That could make it the largest opposition party if Mrs Merkel wins, as expected, and renews her ‘grand coalition’ with the SPD.
