Illegal mosque set up in Milan. For two years, Socialist council rejects requests to shut it down. Locals gather to recite “Ave Maria” as the Mohammedans exit their mosque.

For two years the residents have been called for the place of worship to be closed, denouncing “the constant comings-and-goings of unidentified persons in the courtyard of the block of flats they live in”. “They say they are Italians, but they don’t respect the laws of our country” says the caretaker of the building. “We’re sick of it. We can’t take any more,” says one resident, “during Ramadan we couldn’t sleep because of the prayers and the smell of food coming from the basement.”
